CPCS Overview and Mission

In its practice and in the educational opportunities it provides, the College of Public and Community Service (CPCS) endeavors to function as an inclusive, democratic, and participatory learning community that promotes diversity, equality, and social justice. A core part of the college's mission is to "educate students to foster the public good and aid the transformation to a more equitable society." Through educational programs, research and technical assistance projects, the college works toward overcoming our society's attitudes, beliefs and structures that discourage full participation in economic, civic, cultural and political life.

Learning to Make a Difference

CPCS is a college for people who are seeking to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others. It provides an empowering and effective education to people who are committed to working for social justice and who want to promote positive development in their communities.

Students who are attracted to the college represent the diversity of the metropolitan community:

  • Students range in age from 18 to 90
  • About 70% are from low-income areas
  • 60% are women
  • More than 30% identify themselves as members of communities of color.

Students come to CPCS with a variety of goals:

  • Some are community and public service professionals seeking to improve their effectiveness in their respective fields.
  • Some are eager for an undergraduate education that will provide them a solid preparation for entry into professional work or study in areas such as law, policy, advocacy, planning, social work, education or non-profit management.
  • Some are community members or workers who have a desire to understand more about their communities and workplaces and who wish to improve their effectiveness as leaders, activists, cultural workers, or advocates.
  • Some are students attracted to a college offering a social justice perspective who want to explore and develop their understanding of political, social and economic issues.
