Freshman Success Community

The College of Science and Mathematics hosted the first Freshman Success Community Boat Cruise on Thursday, October 8, 2009 to celebrate the launch of the new Freshman Success Communities (FSC) in September. The M/V Columbia Point Vessel cruised to downtown Boston with students from the two new pilot FSC cohorts along with faculty and staff members from UMass Boston.
"The boat cruise was a wonderful opportunity for the students to get to know each other better as well as to mingle with different members of the UMass Boston community," explained Andrew Grosovksy, Dean, College of Science and Mathematics.
What are Freshman Success Communities?
They are small groups of science students who:
- Help each other navigate through a large university setting
- Enroll in the same two or three core courses grouped by academic discipline
- Receive priority enrollment in major courses
- Connect with university resources for academic support and to find research and career opportunities
- Form study groups to achieve academic excellence and finish their degrees in a shorter time period
