Studio Art in Nantucket: Painting Away Off Shore
This two-week intensive summer workshop will encompass an immersive painting experience that draws upon Nantucket’s rich history and its unique landscape. Students will produce works that address the Nantucket experience, choosing from a broad scope of methods that range from traditional Plein Air painting to more contemporary approaches. Students will have unlimited access to the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station at Quaise, with over 100 acres of conservation land, its own harbor beach front, fresh and saltwater marsh habitats, and many rare wildlife species.
In order to enrich their studio work, students are encouraged to explore the historical and social fabric of Nantucket and its unique role in American history. To this end, students are strongly advised to tap into the multiple cultural resources available on the island, in particular the Athenaeum and the Whaling Museum.
Studio work will be complemented by lectures and presentations. The class will meet for a total of ten six-hour sessions. Students will enjoy two full weeks in Nantucket during the high summer season, including the 4th of July celebrations. During their stay, students will be housed at Gouin Village, a complex close to the shops and restaurants of historic downtown Nantucket.
Prerequisite: By permission only.
