Qualifying Paper Proposal
1) What is the Qualifying Paper Proposal?
The Qualifying Paper Proposal is a paper that makes an argument for a proposed literature review. It must be no more than 20 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt. font, 1” margins), and should approximately resemble Chapter 1 of the dissertation. The Qualifying Paper Proposal fulfills the following criteria:
-
identifies a significant problem area in urban education
-
sets the issue in the wider context of urban education
-
demonstrates the importance of and provides a rationale for investigating the topic
-
demonstrates an awareness of a range of relevant theory or prior research, and indicates which of these the student will develop further in the QP
-
is written clearly and documents its sources.
2) Deadlines, Support, and Evaluation
-
Qualifying Paper Proposals are due in January of the student’s second year
The integrative seminar for each group, as it approaches the Qualifying Paper Proposal deadline, will be geared toward development of the proposal. Qualifying Paper Proposals will be read and responded to by faculty on the LIUS Program Planning Committee. Students will receive decisions and written responses to their Qualifying Paper Proposals within one month after submitting the proposal. Qualifying Paper Proposals will be evaluated as:
-
Accept – no revisions are required.
-
Accept with Revisions – minor revisions are required, but the paper does not require further review by the faculty.
-
Revise and Resubmit – the proposal must be revised and resubmitted to the faculty for further review.
-
Unacceptable – the student must develop and submit a new proposal to the faculty.
-
The Program Committee will establish dates for submitting proposals needing revisions, but generally such revisions should be submitted no later than the first day of the new academic semester following the original submission. Under no circumstances should they be submitted later than May 1. Students are expected to work with a faculty member to revise their work or develop a new Qualifying Paper Proposal. Students are allowed one opportunity to resubmit the Qualifying Paper Proposal.
