Requirements

The Major

1) Requirements for the East Asia track of the Asian Studies Major consist of four core courses, a language requirement, and five electives.

Four Core courses:

  • Hist/Asian 115L Survey of Contemporary Asia
  • Phil 297 Asian Philosophy
  • One 300-level course related to South Asia
  • Mdnlng/Asian 488L, The Idea of Asia (the Capstone course)

Language requirement:

  • Intermediate Mandarin-Chinese or Japanese 201 and 202. Students with no knowledge of these languages will need to take Chinese or Japanese 101 and 102 as prerequisites for placing into the intermediate 200-level language courses. Students placing out of Chinese or Japanese 202 will substitute two other courses related to East Asia, 200-level or above (See List of Courses).  Students placing out of Chinese or Japanese 201 but not 202 will substitute one other course related to East Asia, 200-level or above. (Students wanting to count Vietnamese or Korean as fulfillment of the language requirement should consult the Director of Asian Studies).

Five Electives:

  • Electives must be related to East Asia
  • Three of which must be 300-level or above (See List of Courses).

Seven of the eleven required courses for the Major must be taken in residence.

No courses taken Pass/Fail count toward this Major.

2) Requirements for the South Asia track of the Asian Studies Major consist of four core courses and seven electives.

Four Core courses:

  • Hist/Asian 115L Survey of Contemporary Asia
  • Phil 297 Asian Philosophy
  • One 300-level course related to East Asia
  • Mdnlng/Asian 488L, The Idea of Asia (the Capstone course)

Seven Electives:

  • Electives must be related to South Asia
  • Two must be at the 200-level or higher
  • Three must be at the 300-level or higher
  • Seven of the eleven required courses for the Major must be taken in residence.

No courses taken Pass/Fail count toward this Major.

Cross-Cultural Minor in East Asian Studies

The requirements of this minor are as follows:

Seven Courses Minimum -See List of Courses

No more than two 100-level courses, including one of the following introductory courses:

  • Asian/Hist 160L: East Asian Civilizations I, prior to 1850
  • Asian/Hist 161L: East Asian Civilizations II, since 1850

Two courses at the 300-level or above

Six non-language electives in East Asian studies

*Completion of two semesters of study in a single East Asian language can count as one of the six elective courses required in this Minor. Requirements for students wanting to count language courses toward this Cross-Cultural Minor will be: One introductory course, two language courses in a single East Asian language, and five other non-language electives.

 

Language Minor in East Asian Studies

Requirements consist of :

Language Proficiency through to at least the Second Year, in Mandarin-Chinese or Japanese.

  • Only one 100-level language course may count towards this requirement.
  • Students must complete first-semester language (the "101" course) or place out of that course to begin accumulating credits towards this program.
  • Students must take three language courses.

*Students wishing to count Vietnamese or Korean language toward fulfilling the language requirement should see the Director of Asian Studies.

Four Electives

  • Two of these courses must be at the 300-level or above, but only one of them may be in the focus language.
  • Students may take no more than two 100-level courses total to count towards this minor (typically, one 100-level course is devoted to language study). Students are encouraged to take courses that build context for language, such as those focused on cross-cultural studies or those devoted to the country of interest, but this is not required.

Note that the Modern Languages Department also offers a Minor in Chinese and a Minor in Japanese.
