Research
Professor McDermott's primary areas of publication have been Greek Tragedy, specifically Euripides‹she is the author of Euripides¹ Medea: The Incarnation of Disorder (Pennsylvania Univ. Press, 1989)‹and Augustan Latin poetry, with an emphasis on Horace.  She has also worked in the area of reception studies, with articles appearing on uses of classical literary elements in modern authors such as Alexandre Dumas, Thomas Hardy, and Charles Frazier.  Her most recent work has involved literary and historical examination of the progress of the classical education through various eras, locales, and cultures.

Teaching
Prof. McDermott has taught almost every language and literature course in the department, with a recent emphasis on Latin.  In Spring 2008 she taught Latin Prose Composition and has spent part of each summer immersed in the active use of Latin; she has been a guiding light of the Conventiculum Bostoniense.
