As of  Fall 2009, UMB will offer a Major in Asian Studies.
Two tracks are now planned for this Major
-- An Asian track, which students can sign up for in Fall of 2009
-- A South Asian track, which is still being developed and will be offered sometime in the future.

Students planning to enroll in the Asian Major should plan to take the required intro course Hist/Asian 115 in Fall 2009.  Click here for a list of other courses available Fall 2009.

The Asian track in this Asian Studies Major  will  normally require 11 courses:

1.    Asian Studies Core (three courses):
-  History 115 (Survey of Contemporary Asia)
-  Philosophy 297 (Asian Philosophy)
-  History 364 (India Since 1857), or  other 300-level South Asian  courses developed in the future.

2. Languages (Minimum of two courses)
- Two 200-level courses in Chinese or Japanese   language.  Students entering with no Asian language will  normally  have to take Chinese/Japanese 101 and 102 in order to place  into these  200-level courses.  Students with language  proficiency placing out of  200-level courses will substitute two  other courses in language, literature,  or film related to Asia,  200-level or above.

3. Two electives related to East Asia at any level.

4. Three 300-level courses related to East Asia, plus the capstone course, the Idea of Asia.
