UNDERGRADUATE ENGLISH MAJOR REQUIREMENTS:
FOR STUDENTS DECLARED BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 2007

Students majoring in English must complete, with a grade of C- or better, a minimum of 10 courses beyond the freshman level. Courses taken Pass/Fail do not count toward the major.

Note: Students declaring a major in English beginning in Fall 2002 are required to take, or to have equivalency credit for, a Capstone course (ENGL 460-499). This course will count as one of the upper-level courses required of all majors.

At the sophomore level, all English majors must take the following prerequisites to advanced study:

1. English 200 (Literary Studies I)
2. English 201 (Five British Authors)
3. English 202 (Six American Authors)

At least one of these three required sophomore-level courses must be successfully completed before the English major begins advanced-level work.

English majors must also complete a minimum of six courses at the advanced level. All 300 and 400 courses are advanced; no distinction is made between the two groups. Advanced courses have been categorized into the following areas:

A. Writing
B. Language and Critical Theory
C. Literary Forms, Modes and Genres
D. Literature, History and Society
E. Authors

It is not necessary to take a course in every category. Instead, one course must be taken in Category C and one in Category D. In addition, majors must take at least one advanced course in which a major portion of the literature studied is from before 1850.

The distribution category for each advanced course is indicated by letter code after the course title in our semester-to-semester Course Booklets. See also the comprehensive course list on the last page of this Handbook. An asterisk (*) will follow the letter code for courses which satisfy the pre-1850 requirement.

These sophomore and advanced requirements total 9 courses; the tenth course required for the major may be taken at either the sophomore or advanced level.

ADDITIONAL COURSES WHICH COUNT TOWARD THE MAJOR

Humanities, American Studies, Women's Studies, and Linguistics courses, if taught by English faculty. As well as THARTS Z250, Z251, 351

One course (maximum 3 credits) of Independent Study, which must be approved by the chairperson of the department.

Only 3 of the six credits for the Senior Honors Program will count toward the major.

3. 100-level courses and ENG G262
