ADVISING

Students declare their Major or Minor in Spanish in an interview with the Department Chair. During this interview Majors declare a track in either Language or Literature. Students receive detailed written information about the programs and advise from the Chair on unique features of our academic program, such as Independent Studies, Honors, special Prizes. They are made aware of departmental procedures, such as Incompletes, minimum GPA, Pass/Fail regulations, and pre-registration policies. A departmental advisor is assigned to every Major, Minor, and Latin American Studies Concentrator in accordance with his/her interests and objectives (i.e., language/literature track, Latin American/Peninsular literature, LAS, career goals in education, business, public service, etc.)

An advising-hold system is in place for all Spanish Majors, Minors and LAS Concentrators until graduation. Students cannot register in any Spanish courses prior to visiting their departmental advisor and receiving his/her written approval every semester. After interviewing the student and reviewing his/her progress, the advisor recommends courses and lifts the advising hold so that the student can register.

Detailed individual academic files on every Major and Minor are kept in the Department and are updated every semester. All advisors review these materials before approving the student’s program of study for the following semester.

The Latin American Studies Major is available through the Individual Majors Program. In close collaboration with a faculty advisor, students develop an individual program of interdisciplinary study focused on Latin America and emphasizing their own areas of interest and professional goals

Departmental policy on Incompletes: The Department observes the University Incomplete Policy. The grade of Incomplete (INC) is reported only when a portion of required class work or the final examination, has not been completed because of serious illness, extreme personal circumstances, or scholarly reasons at the request of the instructor. All Incompletes in Hispanic Studies/Latin American Studies must be approved by the chair of the Department.

Departmental policy on Independent Studies: Students who wish to take an Independent Study course must submit a written proposal explaining the project. The student must select a departmental faculty to direct the study. The faculty member must present the proposal for approval by the full Department before the pre-registration period of the semester in which the course will be taken.
