We offer both a major and a minor in history.

The History Major

No course may be taken pass/fail.

  2 semesters of History of Western Civilization (Hist. 111 and 112) 6 credits
  2 semesters of History of the United States (Hist. 165 and 166) 6 credits
 

1 semester of course work in non-Western history

(Asian, African, Middle Eastern, Latin American, or World history)

3 credits
  1 advanced course (300 level or above) in European history before 1800 3 credits
  1 advanced course (300 level or above) in any field of history after 1800 3 credits
  1 research and methods seminar (History 480 or 481) 3 credits
  4 electives 12 credits
 

TOTAL 12 courses [At least 6 courses must be at the 300 level or above] 36 credits


ADVANCED PLACEMENT and C.L.E.P. (College Level Examination Program)

The Department will accept up to 6 credits toward the major for advanced placement scores of 4 or better in European and American history and a C.L.E.P. score of 50. With a score of 4 or better (50 for C.L.E.P.) in European, the student may waive either History 111 or 112. With a score of 4 or better in American (50 for C.L.E.P.), the student may waive either History 165 or 166. Credit granted for Advanced Placement or C.L.E.P. cannot be used to satisfy the residency requirement.


The History Minor

No course may be taken pass/fail.

  2 semesters of History of Western Civilization (Hist. 111 and 112) 6 credits
  1 semesters of History of the United States (Hist. 165 and 166) 3 credits
  3 electives [two of which must be at the 300 level or above ] 9 credits
 

TOTAL 6 courses [At least 3 of 6 courses must be taken at UMass Boston] 18 credits
