Music Requirements | Theatre Requirements | Dance Requirements
All students majoring in Music at UMass Boston take the following sequence of courses:
Theory
MUSIC 121-122, 123-124; 221-222, 223-224 (20 credits)
Keyboard Skills
MUSIC 131-132 (4 credits). All music majors are expected to demonstrate elementary keyboard proficiency before graduation. The Keyboard Skills courses are usually taken concurrently with first-year courses in Theory and Ear Training/Sight Singing.
History
MUSIC 301, 302, 303, and one history elective at the 400 level, of which one such elective is offered each spring (12 credits). It is strongly recommended that music majors complete at least two semesters in Theory courses before taking any course in Music History. The Music History courses may be taken out of sequence.
Ensemble Performance
MUSIC 101, 102, 104, or 106 (six semesters or 12 credits)
Solo Performance
MUSIC 185 (8 credits)
In order to be certified for graduation, a student must achieve at least a level four out of eight proficiency levels in solo performance. Repertoire lists of the eight proficiency levels are available from instructors or from the Department office. Students majoring in music must perform before a faculty jury at the end of each semester.
THRART 201 (Theatre History)
THRART 123 (Theatre Crafts I) or
THRART 223 (Theatre Crafts II)
THRART 230 (Workshop in Drama: 2 semesters)
THRART 236 (Acting I)
In addition, Theatre Arts Majors must take three courses in dramatic literature, one of which may be taken from the offerings of another department; and three advanced courses in Theatre Arts (300 level or above).
In all, a minimum of eleven semester courses in Theatre Arts is required for graduation.
DANCE 130 (Understanding Dance)
DANCE 330 (The Pedagogy of Dance) or DANCE 331 (Choreography)
DANCE 325 (Dance Theatre Workshop)
[PLEASE NOTE: NONE OF THE ABOVE COURSES MAY BE TRANSFERRED IN FROM ANOTHER INSTITUTION. ALL DANCE MINORS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THESE COURSES AT UMASS BOSTON.]
In addition, Dance Minors must complete one course sequence from the following:
DANCE 132 (Ballet 1) & DANCE 232 (Intermediate Ballet) or
DANCE 232 (Intermediate Ballet) & DANCE 332 (Advanced Ballet) or
DANCE 133 (Jazz Dance 1) & DANCE 233 (Jazz Dance 2) or
DANCE 134 (Modern Dance 1) & DANCE 234 (Modern Dance 2)
AND Dance Minors must complete one Dance course offered that is not already being counted in the above requirements. Not all courses are offered every semester or academic year.)
