The Knapp Scholarship in Political Science                                    Deadline: 1 June 2009

Each year the Political Science Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston awards one or more scholarships to outstanding students. The scholarship is named after David C. Knapp, former President of the University of Massachusetts. The Department has $2,400 – $4,000 to provide financial assistance towards the payment of tuition and fees for the Fall 2009 semester.

Eligibility: To be eligible for a Knapp Scholarship, a student must have completed between 30 and 100 credit hours at the undergraduate level. Also, a student must have completed at least 3 UMB Political Science courses by May 27, 2009. An applicant need not be a Political Science major.

Selection Criteria: While the principal criterion in the selection of the scholarship recipients is evidence of outstanding academic performance, other factors such as public and community service, career goals, and personal background will also be considered.

Application Materials: Applicants must provide

  1. an official copy of their most recent UMass/Boston transcript including Spring 2009 grades and, if applicable, transcripts from other institutions of higher education that they attended, and
  2. a typed autobiographical essay of 500-600 words. The essay should include information about the applicant's personal background, educational interests, and possible future career plans, as well as indicate why the scholarship is important to him or her. Applicants should feel free in the essay to provide other information that might assist the selection committee in evaluating them.
  3. The applicant's home address, email address, telephone number, ums student number should be provided with the materials submitted.

Deadline: All application materials for the Knapp Scholarship competition must be submitted to the Department of Political Science (W-5-070) no later than Monday, June 1, 2009, 4:30 p.m. If the office is closed, submit the application under the Department Chair door, W-5-065.

Announcements of Awards: The Political Science Department will notify the recipient(s) of the Knapp Scholarship by Monday, June 15, 2009.
