September 12-16, 2007 Internationally renown scholars came to UMass Boston for five days to examine the complex issues involved in studying Islam and diverse Muslim communities in the world. Among the topics discussed were multiple interpretations of Islam and Islamic feminisms; representation of Muslim women; the perceived "tension" between religious observance and commitment to democratic values; transnational activism among Muslim communities; the ways in which Muslim women are shaping legal, political, economic and cultural processes; the incredible diversity among Muslim societies (scholars represented Malaysia, Bangladesh, Iran, India, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Canada, France, and the United States); sexuality and religiosity.
