Certificate in Archives (graduate level)

Beginning with the Spring 2011 semester, the Department of History will institute a graduate-level, 15-hour Certificate in Archives that will that will be based on the courses offered in the new Archives Track in the History M.A. program.

The Certificate in Archives responds to an exciting and challenging time for archives and archivists. Digital technologies are burgeoning, requiring new skills for capturing information and for disseminating documentary evidence both to scholars and to the general public. At the same time, those entering the field must have a foundation in the traditional archival commitments to careful preservation of information and efficient access to materials. Throughout the courses there is an emphasis on development of administrative skills.

Requirements for the Certificate in Archives include the four History courses in the Archives Track (HIST 670, 671, 676 and 678). One of these courses is the “Archival Internship,” consisting of 120 hours working under the direction of a professional archivist at an archival institution selected by the Director of the Archives Track. In addition, each certificate student will take one elective Public History course in the History Department, a requirement that emphasizes the need for students to be prepared to engage and serve constituencies beyond the traditional research community.

To be admitted to this certificate program, prospective students will apply to the graduate program of the History Department and must meet the same standards as students admitted to the M.A. program. Students completing the five courses will apply to the History Department for the certificate and will be awarded the certificate upon determination that they have successfully completed the requirements.

The current Director of the Archives Track is Professor Darwin Stapleton. For more information about this new certificate program, please contact him at Darwin.Stapleton@umb.edu.
