What was your favorite aspect of attending UMass Boston and College of Management Graduate Programs?
I had been working in hotels for years before enrolling in the MBA program, and I wanted to shift into a profession that would provide a greater benefit to society - specifically around protecting the natural environment.  The specializations offered at UMB were a perfect fit with where I wanted to take my career.  The flexibility of taking classes at night were a perfect combination for fitting grad school into an already busy life.  I was able to continue working full-time, took night classes part-time, and was able to successfully transition into the cleantech space.

What are you doing with, or hope to do with your degree?
I am working for an energy management company where we help commercial and industrial electricity customers reduce consumption, align procurement strategies with their tolerance for risk, and provide a valuable resource to electric grid operators in times of peak demand.  It's a fascinating new field for me with many more years of learning ahead.  I find that I am using the principles and concepts I learned in environmental management, along with the tools and techniques from finance, to provide service and advice to customers about something I care deeply about.  This has been a truly fulfilling journey for me.

What will you will miss from UMass Boston College of Management Graduate Programs?
I will miss having regular interaction and thought-provoking conversations with professors, specifically those involved with the Environmental Management specialization and SERC, the Center for Sustainable Enterprise and Regional Competitiveness.  That curriculum is so innovative - it forces students to understand the grand-scale concepts, and it challenges us to use what we know of political and economic forces to come up with real-world solutions.  The professors involved with this curriculum really believe in the opportunities for businesses to combine profitability with a strong set of values that go beyond the hours of operation or the doors of the warehouse. The professors at UMB share their insights and enthusiasm to help students think outside the standard business parameters, and redefine success for our own future benefit.

Have you been able to stay involved with UMass Boston College of Management Graduate Programs since graduating? If so, how has that occurred?
It's only been a few months, so I'm still figuring out how to stay involved while managing a challenging new job.  Knowing that UMass Boston has a core of professionals who care about helping businesses to provide more than just profit to shareholders, I'm sure there will be many opportunities to remain involved with the UMB community.
