Eligiblity
- Students entering the College of Management in the Fall semester directly from high school, or from another college or university with fewer than thirty transfer credits are eligible to apply.
- Enrollment into the program is based on a Math placement score of 115, 129, or 134, an English placement of ENGL 101, and space in the program. Students take the appropriate placement exams during the assessment program, prior to Beacon Beginnings: Orientation for New Students.
Program Benefits
- Priority registration for four semesters in reserved course sections that meet pre-requisites, fulfill requirements, build a critical foundation for the management core, and keep you on track for a timely graduation.
- Advising directly from College of Management staff from day one of your enrollment.
- Integration of the Management Achievement Program (MAP) requirements into the LEAD program in a meaningful and deliberate manner.
- Peer LEADers to show you the ropes, share their stories, and incorporate co-curricular experiences to enrich your educational experience.
- Designated network of peers, faculty, and resources to put you on the road to success.
How to Enroll in Management LEAD?
Students interested in the program should submit the online interest form. Students will receive a confirmation email when the form is submitted and can expect to hear from the College regarding their interest shortly after.
Any questions regarding your submitted interest form should be directed to Mara Sidman at management-LEAD@umb.edu.
Advising
Students in the LEAD Program will be advised in the College of Management Undergraduate Program office by Mara Sidman, Student Services Specialist. Students are welcome to visit Mara during walk-in hours in the Undergraduate Program Office, located on the 5th floor, room 610 (M-5-610).
Students are required to meet with an advisor before registering for the following semester, and will have an advising hold placed on their record, which prevents registration. Students are also strongly encouraged to meet with their advisor if they have any questions or concerns, large or small, as they progress toward graduation.
Curriculum
The Management LEAD program does not add any additional curricular requirements, but instead takes those requirements and clusters them into specific groupings that ensure students will meet pre-requisites and requirements in an appropriate progression. Students in the LEAD program are also guaranteed a seat in those clustered courses (highlighted below), making the registration process easier. We continue this system of grouping classes for LEAD students for the first four semesters, as outlined below, until students reach upper level status and delve into the management core and concentration coursework.

MGT 130
One of the most important elements of the LEAD program is MGT 130: Introduction to Business. This LEAD course serves as a front door and a good beginning to our undergraduate curriculum, especially for those without significant business experience, full time- first time students, or those with less than 30 transfer credits. As an umbrella course in the program, all students take this class together. MGT 130 focuses on business thought and action; the structure, behaviors, and responsibilities of firms and organizations working on the “corner’, or that have a place in the regional, national, and international economies; an understanding of how businesses and markets interact, sources of business success and failure; an overview of industries and industrial policy; the role of CEOs in society. The course is not about functional activities within a firm, but rather lays the foundation for students to better understand those functional areas as they progress through the curriculum.
MAP Integration
All College of Management students are required to complete the Management Achievement Program (MAP) requirements. MAP events will be incorporated into the LEAD program so students participating will be actively working to earn MAP miles from their very first semester. Students entering CM with fewer than 30 credits have a MAP requirement of 1000 miles. Starting in the Fall 2011, MAP events will be placed into categories, and students in the LEAD program will be directed toward events in certain categories, as they are most developmentally appropriate for corresponding elements of the program.
Peer LEADers
Peer LEADers are current CM students selected to be a part of the LEAD program in this peer mentoring and role model position. LEADers are paired with a cohort of incoming students, are available to help new students navigate the university system, will plan co-curricular activities for the LEAD community, and be an easily accessible and trustworthy resource for incoming students participating in LEAD.
