Options for Non-Management Majors
There are various opportunities for students who are not in the management major in the College of Management to take management courses or complete specific academic programs or plans.
Students who have a major outside of the College of Management are eligible to complete a minor in management within the College of Management. There are many majors in the College of Liberal Arts, College of Science and Mathematics, or College of Nursing and Health Sciences, among others, that would be complimented by the management minor.
Students who are in the Psychology major, and who have been accepted by that department into the organizational behavior track within the psychology major can take the necessary courses to complete that track. The track, and admission to it, are managed by the Psychology Department. The College of Management Undergraduate Program Office will assist students in the registration process for these students, and still requires all course pre-requisites to be met. Only students who have the Organizational Behavior track with in the Psychology Major officially declared on Wiser will be given to take courses for this track.
Non-Management and Non-Degree Students Registering for Management Major Courses
Effective Spring 2009, non-management students may take up to 18 credits (6 courses) in the College of Management from the Management major. These six courses are limited to the following choices:
AF 210: Financial Accounting
AF 301: Financial Management
Note: Non-CM students will be able to take this course only if AF 211 was completed at UMB prior to spring 2009, or if transfer credit was awarded for AF 211 prior to enrolling at UMB. All other pre-requisites must be met.
BC 230: Fundamentals of Business Communication and Critical Analysis
BC 290: Professional Written Communication and Critical Analysis
Note: Students must take the College of Management Writing Assessment and get a placement result of BC 290 to take this course. All other pre-requisites must be met.
MGT 303: Managing Organizations
MKT 301: Principles of Marketing
MSIS 110: Introduction to Computers and Information Systems
MSIS 212: Managerial Decision Making
Note: Students will no longer be able to take MSIS 111L/IT 111L prior to MSIS 212, however one of the following courses can be taken in place of MSIS 111L/IT 111L, and will satisfy the statistics pre-requisite: ECON 205, MATH 125, PSYCH 270, SOCIOL 350.
Note: ALL pre-requisites for the courses must be met before registration can be processed.
AF 201, BC 295, MGT 130, and MSIS 105 are not Management Major required courses, and students can take those in addition to the classes listed above. If a student transfers into the College of Management at a later date, these courses will usually place into the General Elective area.
Non-CM students who are officially enrolled in a CM Partner Program at UMass Boston can register for courses needed for their program on the following dates via the online form:
• For Summer 2013: April 29, 2013
• For Fall 2013: July 8, 2013
Partner Programs include: the Organizational Behavior Track in the Psychology Major; the Fitness and Instruction Management track in the Exercise and Health Science Major; the Information Technology Major (courses for professional electives only); the Management Minor; National and International Exchange Programs.
Non-CM students enrolled in a degree seeking program at UMass Boston can register for the above noted CM courses on the following dates via the online form:
• For Summer 2013: May 13, 2013
• For Fall 2013: July 29, 2013
Non-degree students can register for the above noted CM courses on the following dates via the online form:
• For Summer 2013: May 13, 2013
• For Fall 2013: August 19, 2013
All CM courses must be requested on a Registration Request Form. One the registration period opens, we will have a link to the online registration form on this website. Please go to the Student Resources page, and the registration form links will appear in the blue tool bar on the left side of the page, under the "Student Resources" heading. Please be sure to complete the correct form.
Non-Degree students must also complete a Registration Request Form. You will also need to supply a copy of your past transcripts that indicate the credits completed to date and note completed pre-requisite courses. In addition, you must supply a course description and/or syllabus of the pre-requisite courses that have been completed to date. In addition to seeking this approval in the College of Management, you will also need to have a student record set up at the One Stop Center (CC-UL). They will supply you with a student ID number, which you must also put on your CM Registration Request Form.
For example, if you are a non-degree student and want to take MSIS 212, Managerial Decision Making at UMass Boston, you would need to show a transcript that states you’ve completed the equivalent of our Introduction to Computers and Information Systems course and a statistics course; you will also need to show us a course description of that equivalent course(s). This will allow the College to verify that the pre-requisites have been met and can grant you permission to take the course here.
Once you submit that information, it will be reviewed, and if approved, you will be added to the course. If you have additional questions, please call the Undergraduate Program Office at 617-287-7760 to get more information.
