Dr. Cannon’s research has explored the experiences of African-American daughters who have functioned as caregivers to their aging parents with the purpose of increasing cultural awareness and sensitivity. Dr. Cannon’s work in this area has investigated psychosocial factors impacting the African-American caregiver and the context in which they provide care. She has published and presented this work. She has a strong interest in exploring the psychosocial factors in the minority population, particularly, in the areas of cancer and caregiving, health disparities, and instrumentation development of a more culturally sensitive tool that measures caregiving strain in African-Americans. Dr. Cannon has worked in consultation with black churches as an educator on mental health, and has implemented and facilitated numerous African-American caregiving support groups. She has practiced for a number of years as a psychotherapist.
