Japanese Art & Westernization

Description:
In the later nineteenth-century, international pressure on Japan to open trade and diplomatic relations precipitated the collapse of its feudal government. Japans new leaders accepted the premise that Japan must westernize to survive. Transition to constitutional monarchy, westernized institutional organizations and new technologies led Japanese intellectuals to challenge notions of indigenous and foreign, progress and adaptation. This course looks at how artists faced these challenges, bringing visual expression to social ferment.
