Literature of the Atlantic
Description:
A study of writings produced in and about the Atlantic world during the successive eras of exploration, colonization, commercialization, revolution, and nation-formation. The course begins by comparing English imaginings of the mysterious lands to the west with the realities of conquest in the New World. It continues by considering such prominent parts of eighteenth-century Atlantic life, such as international commerce, the slave trade, and the African diaspora, as well as charting connections between the development of English and American senses of "nation."
