Description:
This course examines Jane Austen's major works with regard to content and context. In trying to understand the enduring popularity of Austens major novels, we will discuss questions of adaptation and nostalgia, style and social class. In reading Austens major novels, students will be encourages to understand philosophical issues (most notably aesthetics and the theory of the mind), and historical aspects of Regency period culture (the marriage market, inheritance practices, Britains view of France, the slave trade, and novel reading). Attention will also be paid to other important female writers of her time in the attempt to understand Austens posthumous elevation to literary stardom.
