Environmental Studies (Program)
The undergraduate Environmental Studies Program (ESP) at UMass Boston is an interdisciplinary program of study that helps students understand the underlying causes of environmental problems and encourages a search for solutions. In recognition of the complexity of environmental issues, the program is broadly based in the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences.
The Environmental Studies Program supplements a student’s chosen major. In addition to satisfying the requirements of a major within an academic department, students complete a set of core courses, participate in advanced work in their chosen area of specialization, and complete an environmental internship. Courses may be used simultaneously to satisfy the general education distribution and core requirements in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science and Mathematics.
ESP offers two tracks that provide environmental literacy and advanced problem-solving skills. The Environmental Science Track is designed for students in natural sciences, while the Environment and Society Track is designed for students in social sciences and humanities.
