Chemistry/Biological Chemistry, PhD

Degree Requirements

For the PhD in Chemistry/Biological Chemistry Track, 60 credits are required from courses, seminars (CHEM 691 & 692), and Dissertation Research (CHEM 899), distributed as follows:

  • Core courses: Green Chemistry (CHEM 671) or Chemical Toxicology (CHEM 631)
  • Two core courses from  CHEM 658, CHEM 680, and CHEM 681.
  • Elective courses: Three courses in addition to the courses taken as your core courses chosen from: 601, 602, 611, 612, 621, 622, 631, 651, 658, 661, 671, 680, and 681.

Additional Elective courses:  In addition to the set of core courses listed above, up to two of the following courses can be taken       as electives with the permission of your dissertation committee: CHEM 687, CHEM 688, CHEM 689, CHEM 690, CHEM 696, CHEM 697, EEOS 611, EEOS 640, EEOS 710, EEOS 715, BIOL 614, BIOL 678, BIOL 679, BIOL 685, PHYS 612, PHYS 601, PHYS 632, PHYS 609, PHYS 615, PHYS 621, PHYS 622.

  •     CHEM 691 (Seminar I) and CHEM 692 (Seminar II) in every semester of attendance.
  •     Literature seminar presentation, based on review of the scientific literature related to a selected topic of current chemical interest. The literature seminar must be completed within the first two years of matriculation.
  •     A Written Comprehensive Examination and an Oral Examination to be admitted to candidacy. (For more information on these examinations, please refer to the Seminars & Talks section)
  •     Dissertation and defense based on original research relevant to Biological Chemistry.
  •     All students must acquire at least one semester of teaching or work experience in chemistry, subject to approval by the Graduate Program Director.

Admission Requirements

The Chemistry Program will recommend admission for those applicants who present evidence of their ability to do graduate work with distinction. Applicants should present:

    Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (aptitude and advanced tests).
    Three letters of recommendation.
