Faculty and Research

While the College of Science and Mathematics offers dozens of majors, minors, and certificate programs, the majority of our faculty members belong to one of the three research areas listed below. Undergraduates have the opportunity to work with these faculty members in their research labs. This invaluable experience benefits students when they seek employment or apply to graduate school.

The molecular sciences can include biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, and physics when these disciplines focus, often together, on how life functions, or doesn't function as we believe it should, at the molecular level.

The computational sciences includes computer science, mathematics, and physics. The primary focus of the field is the constructlaser collageion of computer-based models and numerical analysis techniques to simulate, evaluate, and solve problems through the integration of large amounts of data.

The environmental sciences include biology and many components of the molecular and computational sciences. Environmental UMass alumni magazinesciences represent the study of interaction among physical, chemical, and biological components of the environment. For example, environmentalists study and produce research on climate change, conservation, biodiversity, water quality, groundwater contamination, soil contamination, use of natural resources, waste management, etc.
