Department of Leadership in Education
Educational Administration Program
Go to http://www.umb.edu/admissions/graduate/ for the general statement of admission requirements for all graduate programs, as well as the general application for graduate admission. Contact the program office (617.287.7601 or leadership.education@umb.edu) for program-specific application materials, which are described below. The application deadline is March 15.
The program will recommend admission for those M.Ed. applicants who present evidence of their ability to do graduate work with distinction. Such evidence will normally include:
- An undergraduate grade point average at the time of graduation of at least 2.75, as evidenced by an official transcript.
- Three letters of recommendation from people familiar with the applicant’s leadership ability and/or potential.
- Documentation of two or more years of full-time teaching as a certified teacher at grade levels K-12.
- Documentation of state teaching certificate.
- Submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores. Submission of these scores is not required but optional.
- An interview with the program director.
Applicants for the CAGS will be expected to hold a master’s degree in some area of education from a nationally accredited institution; applicants will also be expected to meet all of the admission requirements for the M.Ed. program.
Please note that all students in this program who are seeking Massachusetts certification must take the Massachusetts Teacher Tests as part of the certification process.
Higher Education Doctoral Program

Contact the program office (617.287.7601 or leadership.education@umb.edu) for program-specific application materials, which are described below. The application deadline is February 1.
Requirements for admission to the EdD in Education/Higher Education Administration Track include the submission of an admissions portfolio consisting of:
- an essay (approximately 1500 words) describing the applicant’s background and career aspirations, with an emphasis on the kinds of changes in higher education he or she is interested in bringing out. The essay must include a description of a critical incident involving change in which the applicant took part, explaining his or her role in it
- a resume or curriculum vitae
- three letters of recommendation, including one from a supervisor at the current place of employment, describing and giving evidence of the applicant’s potential as an initiator and implementer of education reform; the letters should assess the applicant’s level of motivation for and commitment to a leadership role in higher education
- a completed Employer Agreement Form, which shows year-by-year how the applicant and his or her employer will arrange the applicant’s work life to permit the applicant to meet the program’s requirements, including both the specified periods during each of the three summers and a full weekday on campus each week during the semesters leading up to the dissertation seminars
- official transcripts of all previous academic work, graduate and undergraduate, demonstrating particularly that the applicant has earned a master’s degree or equivalent from a college or university of recognized standing
- test scores from the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); submission of these scores is optional
The admissions committee will interview all finalists before making its recommendations for acceptance to the program.
Leadership in Urban Schools Doctoral Program

The Leadership in Urban Schools (LIUS) Doctoral Program seeks applicants who already hold a master’s degree or equivalent, and who can demonstrate:
- accomplishment in the field of K-12 education, particularly through school reform initiatives
- sustained interest in the culture, structure, and operation of urban schools in new approaches to administration and policy development and in issues of learning and teaching
- the potential for academic success and for completing the program without delay
- a desire to provide leadership for change in urban education
Applicants are invited to demonstrate these qualifications through submission of an admissions portfolio consisting of:
- an essay of approximately 1500 words describing the applicant’s aspirations and goals as a leader in urban schools and the ways in which these goals have been shaped by the applicant’s experience as a learner, educator, and/or participant in the effort to improve educational opportunities in the urban K-12 context
- a resume or curriculum vitae
- three letters of recommendation
- official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work
- test scores from the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); submission of these scores is optional
The admissions committee will interview all finalists before making its recommendations for acceptance to the program.
