:: Professional Education Coordinating Council (PECC)

The Professional Education Coordinating Council (PECC) in the Graduate College of Education (GCE) at the University of Massachusetts Boston is the official governance forum for systematic involvement of program candidates, P-12 school professionals, and university faculty both inside and outside the GCE in program planning, managing, evaluating, and direction setting for the preparation of teachers and other school support personnel. PECC is a mandatory part of the review process for all issues related to initial and advanced professional education programs.

PECC is deigned to achieve two goals:

  • Advise the unit head and college senates on curriculum issues, such as school personnel preparation programs, curriculum, and new courses.
  • Set policy for the unit on non-curricular issues such as assessment of professional education programs candidates’ and graduates’ knowledge, skills, and dispositions as articulated by the program conceptual framework of the thoughtful and responsive educator, sate and national standards, program admission and exit criteria.

To accomplish these goals, PECC:

  • provides campus-wide leadership and coordination of initial and advanced professional education preparation programs on the UMass Boston campus;
  • provides a forum for the exchange of related research, practices, and ideas among campus leaders of professional preparation programs;
  • nurtures school-university-agency collaboration, and interdepartmental, inter-college, and center and institute collaboration, in the design and delivery of professional preparation; and
  • ensures that all UMass Boston professional preparation programs reflect best practices, academic and professional integrity, and accountability in their work, from recruitment and admission through job placement.

The PECC is appointed by the Dean of the GCE to assist in carrying out the charge from the Provost to coordinate and oversee all professional education preparation programs on the UMass Boston Campus. The PECC is recognized by the Provost, the GCE Senate and Academic Affairs Curriculum Committee, and by the Graduate Studies Council, in the sequence of campus-wide academic reviews for newly proposed professional preparation programs prior to usual campus academic reviews.
