Project ALERTA Summer Program: ALERTA Verano

ALERTA Verano, Project ALERTA’s four-week long summer program addresses Project ALERTA's commitment to provide year-round academic enrichment to Latino students and to minimize summer learning loss.

In July 2008, Project ALERTA served approximately 50 Boston Public School Latino students and English Language Learners from throughout the city. Students who completed grades 3-5 and who demonstrated motivation to learn were eligible to attend Summer ALERTA, where they received a full day of academic instruction including science, math, reading, writing, creative arts, and study skills. ALERTA strives to provide a challenging academic curriculum, while still recognizing the fact that summer is a time for students to enjoy new experiences, make new friends, and discover new skills and talents. This past summer, our thematic, interdisciplinary curriculum, “Environmental Explorers” allowed students to be engaged and active in collaborative learning, while incorporating team-building activities into all aspects of the program. ALERTA once again hired 4 outstanding Boston Public School teachers to provide program instruction. Teachers were assisted by graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants from UMass Boston and surrounding universities.

ALERTA Verano 2009 will be held from Monday, June 29 – Friday, July 24 at UMass Boston.
