IMPACT ON EDUCATION
Laura Bozeman
Laura Bozeman, Ph.D.
Director and Associate Professor, Vision Studies
Dr. Laura Bozeman heads New England’s only Vision Studies program, housed in UMASS Boston’s Graduate College of Education in collaboration with the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI). The nationally-acclaimed Vision Studies program meets the local and regional community need for Teachers of Students with Visual Impairment (TVI) and Orientation and Mobility Specialists (O&M) through pre-service, mentoring, and professional development opportunities available through UMASS online. The Vision Studies program also provides services to students who are visually impaired in the Boston Public Schools and meets the regional need for vision educators through state liaisons in each of the six New England states. To date, the Program reports 74 graduates and 120 continuing students preparing to address the dearth of vision professionals and to provide specialized instruction for a low incidence and traditionally underserved populations.
Although she has been the Director of the Vision Studies program for the last two years, Dr. Bozeman will begin her first semester as a member of the faculty in the Fall. Dr. Bozeman brings a wealth of relevant international and national experiences to the classroom; she has taught and consulted for many years in New Zealand, Taiwan, England, Texas, and North Carolina. Her experiences working with diverse learners and Historically Black Colleges and Universities have prepared her to work with the nation’s increasingly diverse learners.
Dr. Bozeman holds international certification in Orientation and Mobility and Low Vision. She was licensed as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment in North Carolina. Dr. Bozeman is the current Chair of the International Committee, Co-Chair of the Publishing Committee and Co-Chair of the Personnel Preparation Committee for both the regional and international chapters of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AERBVI).
The College welcomes Dr. Bozeman in her new position as faculty and embraces the Program’s plans to establish a national research and technology center for vision impairments, a doctoral program, and endowed faculty positions.
