IMPACT ON EDUCATION

Lusa Lo

Lusa Lo

Assistant Professor, Curriculum and Instruction

As an advocate for culturally and linguistically diverse families of children with disabilities, Dr. Lusa Lo’s passion is evident not only in her teaching, but also in the community where she educates parents on how to support and advocate for their children with disabilities. Given the small body of research on Asian-American children with disabilities, Dr. Lo’s scholarship and advocacy are critical to adequately addressing the needs of the nation’s increasingly diverse student population.

Dr. Lo moved to Massachusetts three years ago. Within this short period of time, she was able to develop a close partnership with numerous organizations, such as the Federation for Children with Special Needs, Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, and several local support groups. These partnerships epitomize the College’s commitment to teaching, research, and service. Due to the lack of support for the Chinese families and their children with disabilities, about 2 years ago, Dr. Lo and several professionals formed a Chinese Empowering Coalition for Individuals with Special Needs. The mission of this coalition is to unite and support various organizations that serve Chinese individuals and families of children with disabilities. It is their goal to empower these individuals through education and training, advocacy for services and support, and, most importantly, connecting and sharing knowledge with other individuals and organizations.

In 2007, Dr. Lo was honored with the Community Partnership Award by the Federation for Children with Special Needs for her work with the Chinese community. In 2008, her work was acknowledged on the Boston Globe. Click here to view a Boston Globe article highlighting Dr. Lo’s work.

In addition to supporting the Chinese community, Dr. Lo works collaboratively with several government agencies. She was appointed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to serve on the Department of Mental Retardation Statewide Advisory Council and Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission State Rehabilitation Council.
