Academic Programs
The Graduate College of Education provides initial licensure for undergraduate students and professional licensure for graduate students. The College offers 11 degree programs at the master's level, training professionals in such areas as Teacher Education, Special Education, Instructional Design, Rehabilitation Counseling, Family Therapy, Higher Education, and Educational Administration. Some of our programs are also offered online. In addition, we offer a Certificate of Advanced Studies in (CAGS) in Educational Administration. We currently offer two doctoral programs in Higher Education and Leadership in Urban Schools. For a complete list of our degree programs, visit the academic department pages.
The GCE has three academic departments. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction prepares elementary, midddle school, secondary, and special education teachers through several programs for initial or professional licensure at the master's level. It also includes two related programs, Instructional Design and Critical and Creative Thinking, and oversees the education component for undergraduate degrees in elementary, middle, and secondary. The Department of Counseling and School Psychology awards master's degrees and Certificates of Advanced Graduate Studies (similar to specialist degrees) in School Counseling, School Psychology, School Adjustment Counseling, Family Therapy, Rehabilitation Counseling, Forensic Counseling, and Mental Health Counseling. The Department of Educational Leadership offers two doctoral level programs, one in Higher Education Administration and the other in Leadership in Urban Schools and a master's level program, Educational Administration. There are forty-one full-time faculty positions distributed throughout the three academic departments.

All programs in the Graduate College of Education strive to provide every graduate with the following outcomes:
- The knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to promote professional excellence, including an understanding of the theories that guide "best" practice in education;
- The understanding that culture and worldview define meaning in every aspect of individual and group life regardless of one's racial/ethnic background;
- The ability to engage in critical inquiry about all facets of their educational work and its contexts, and in the continuous effort to improve them;
- The ability to use knowledge, ideas, questions, and actions to make corrections, test theories, and create understanding, and
- The ability to recognize the instructional advantages of using new technologies and to assist K-12 students in assessing and evaluating the information obtained from these technologies.
