Lisa Cosgrove, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director (Mental Health Program) in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology. Dr. Cosgrove’s research focuses on two main areas (1) developing counselor training practices that help mental health professionals think critically about and avoid bias in psychiatric diagnosis (2) addressing conflict of interest issues in clinical research and practice. Her research on conflict of interest in psychiatric taxonomy (Cosgrove, Krimsky, Vijayaraghavan & Schneider, 2006) revealed that there were strong financial ties between the pharmaceutical industry and panel members of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Dr. Cosgrove’s research has been supported through grants from NIMH (to the Murray Center, Harvard University), from the University of Massachusetts, and from non-profit foundations. She was a Fellow in the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and Social Consequences (2002-2003) and she has conducted research on the inter-generational impact of war-related PTSD. She serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Social Action in Counseling and Psychology, is an active member of Psychologists for Social Responsibility, is on the executive committee of APA’s Division 35, and from 2001-2005 served on the board for the Association for Women in Psychology.
