Online MS
The Online MS in Mental Health Counseling operates on a cohort model whereby all participants complete the same program of study over a two year period. Clinical courses are taught during the first summer at UMass Dartmouth and all participants must be present for an intensive two-week session held in July or August (low cost student housing accommodations at UMass Dartmouth are provided to participants). The remaining courses are delivered in a web-based on-line format following a semester calendar. Participants must follow the program of study exactly. The program requires a 100-hour practicum in approved placement sites. A 900 hour internship, divided evenly between two semesters, is also required. It consists of supervised field experiences in public and non-profit mental health treatment facilities. While engaged in the field work placement, students attend on-line seminars and receive group supervision through synchronous web conferencing. In doing so, students' experiences are examined in relation to current issues of concern in the field of mental health counseling. Students are also supervised by internship site supervisors and participate in conference calls. Students are expected to provide audio/video tapes of counseling sessions.
The online program is designed for students who cannot readily access the Boston campus. The admissions committee will assess this criterion. Those applicants who can reach the campus are encouraged to apply to the on campus program.
