MTEL policy change

Dear Teacher Education and Special Education Student,
For many years, we have required the passing the MTEL exams before entering Core III of the Teacher Education Program—see your advising booklet. In other words, these exams must be passed before you take the Teacher Research Course and the Practicum (field placement in schools). We shall be strictly enforcing this policy beginning in spring semester 2005.
Because of previous problems in field placement for the practicum and because of policy changes in Boston Public Schools’ which will require that all teachers pass their MTELs (waivers may only be requested for individuals by the superintendent), we will no longer grant waivers for students who have not passed their MTELs. To enter Core III of the Teacher Education Program, you must have successfully passed the MTEL Literacy and Communication Tests and your MTEL Subject Test. For special education students, you also have a fourth state reading exam to pass. Until you provide a copy of your MTEL scores for these exams to the Curriculum and Instruction’s Advising Office, you will be blocked by the University Registrar from registering for these courses. Successfully passing these exams means that you must have at least a score of 70 before you will be allowed to register for courses in Core III.
For those students who have particular problems in the Communication and Literacy MTEL examinations, we recommend taking the Six Saturdays to Success Program offered by Framingham State College. This Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) Preparation Workshop is a six week program on Saturdays which has been highly effective. We suggest that you call them and register for this program at 508-626-4550, ext. 9 or visit their website at www.choosefsc.org/MTELprep.htm for further information. The next program begins in January for next year’s state exams. We are also exploring creating similar options and programs at our own University in the future.
For those students having difficulty passing the content examination, you should meet with one of our advisors in the Curriculum and Instruction Advising Office to review possible courses that you might take in the various departments to help acquire the requisite knowledge needed to pass the examination.
To enable you to become a successful licensed teacher and have the knowledge required by the state and by various districts, we must adhere to our long-standing advising policies and strictly enforce them.
