How to Apply for Admission to the Undergraduate Program for Initial Licensure

Candidates for the Undergraduate Program for Initial Licensure typically do so after accumulating 40 or more credits.  Please click over to the Undergraduate Program for Initial Licensure to learn more.

 

How to Apply to Graduate Programs

  1. You can apply online by visiting http://www.umb.edu/admissions/graduate/apply/index.html

  2. Order a graduate bulletin by calling 617-287-6000, the application is in the back of the bulletin.

 

Admission Requirements

  • A distinguished undergraduate transcript, with a minimum overall GPA of 3.00 (we encourage you to apply even if your GPA falls a bit below 3.00);
  • Evidence of satisfactory grades in major discipline;
  • Three positive and informed letters of recommendation submitted by persons who are knowledgeable about your potential success both as a graduate student and as a teacher. One letter should be from someone who has been your instructor in a college course. In the case of Non-Licensure or Professional Licensure applicants, at least one of these letters should be from a person who serves, or has served, in a supervisory capacity to the candidate;
  • For Non-Licensure: submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE), MTEL Communication and Literacy, or Millers Anology scores.  For all Initial Licensure programs, we require submission of the Communications and Literacy portion of the Massacusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). www.mtel.nesinc.com Passing scores are not required for acceptance; however, they are taken into consideration by the admissions committee.  For Professional Licensure, we require submission of your Massacusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL), and a copy of your licence.
  • The completion of a written statement demonstrating writing proficiency and including the following information:

    1. The applicant's specific goals;

    2. For all Initial Licensure programs: the applicant’s reasons for wanting to become a teacher at the specific level or in the specific field for which certification is being sought.

    3. The Graduate College of Education has as its basic goal that the students who graduate are caring, principled, and respectful educators committed to change for social justice. How would you fit into this program? What experiences or values in your life can you give as examples?

    4. The applicant’s philosophy of education, and thoughts about contemporary schools and current issues in education. This statement replaces the “statement of interests and intent” referred to in the Graduate Admissions Application instructions.

    5. For Special Education, in addition to your statement of interests and intent please submit a writing sample, indicating your ability to write in a clear, professional manner. This sample may be in the form of a previously written term paper or a narrative report on a student evaluation based on the use of formal or informal tests.
