Dr. Flippo is Professor of Education in the Graduate College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She teaches graduate courses in Literacy Diagnosis and also Content Literacy. She is author of 14 books, her most recent one, “Preparing Students for Testing and Doing Better in School” (2008) was just published by Corwin Press / Sage Publishers; other recent titles, published by Heinemann include: Personal Reading (2005), Texts and Tests (2004), Assessing Readers (2003), and What Do the Experts Say? (1999); Reading Researchers in Search of Common Ground (2001) published by the International Reading Association (IRA); and the Handbook of College Reading and Study Strategy Research published by Lawrence Erlbaum (2000). She is currently working on one more book (her 15th): the “Handbook of College Reading and Study Strategy Research (2nd ed.)” for Erlbaum / Taylor & Francis / Routledge to be published in October 2008.
Dr. Flippo has also published over 90 articles and chapters in publications that include
The Reading Teacher, Reading Psychology, the Journal of Reading, the Reading & Writing Quarterly, the Phi Delta Kappan, Educational Leadership, and the Journal of Teacher Education. She has done two educational television series, one series was based on her “Expert Study” and the other on her work with diverse learners of all ages. Dr. Flippo is on many professional journal editorial boards, she was the Chair of IRA’s Intellectual Freedom Committee (2004-2006), currently serves on IRA’s Early Literacy Committee (2007-2009), and was elected to the College Reading Association’s (CRA) Board of Directors (2006-2009). Additionally she was honored as a Literacy Champion (2006-2007) by the Boston Herald and Verizon.
Dr. Flippo has taught from pre-school through college and university levels. She’s done numerous Keynote Addresses in the professional organizations as well as at colleges and universities in the US. She is known for her ability to speak and write plainly and openly to a wide range of audiences on a wide range of topics across grade levels regarding issues in education and literacy, assessment and instruction, student learning and motivation, and professional development. Dr. Flippo actively engages in professional development and mentorship with many colleagues at her university, and she immensely enjoys mentoring her own graduate students’ professional development.
