Master’s Program in early childhood, Elementary, Middle and Secondary Education: Which Program Fits You?
I. If you have a Bachelor's degree but no Initial License to teach, and you wish to work toward Initial Licensure within the context of a Master’s, you may do the following:
Master's in early childhood, Elementary, Middle School, or Secondary Education with Initial Licensure:
A 36-credit program with the following components:
- Academic and field work for Initial Licensure
- A minimum of 75 hours of documented pre-practicum field work
- Successful completion of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure
- A 14-week student teaching practicum
- Additional academic work to complete the Master's in Education
State-Approved General Education Initial Licensure Areas at the Graduate Level:
- Biology 5-8, 8-12
- Chemistry 5-8, 8-12
- Early Childhood PreK-2
- Earth Science 5-8, 8-12
- Elementary 1-6
- English 5-8, 8-12
- History 5-8, 8-12
- Latin 8-12
- Mathematics 5-8, 8-12
- Middle School Humanities 5-8
- Middle School Math and Science 5-8
- Physics 5-8, 8-12
- Political Science/Political Philosophy 5-8, 8-12
- Spanish 5-12
Please note: The Initial Licensure is good for five years of employment. At the end of that time, the additional work required for Professional Licensure must be completed. The Professional License must be renewed every five years. Official policies regarding the recertification of educational personnel are published in a booklet that may be acquired from the Department of Education, 350 Main Street, Malden, Massachusetts, 02148-5023 or at www.doe.mass.edu.
II. If you already possess an Initial License and need a Master's to earn your General Education Professional Licensure, you may do the following:
M.Ed. for Professional Licensure:
A 36-credit Master’s program with three components:
- Core graduate-level courses concerning pedagogy related to your chosen level and field
- Graduate-level concentration courses related to the discipline for which licensure is being sought
- Capstone Sequence: courses and a capstone project related to your field of study and teaching
UMass Boston has Massachusetts DOE approval for General Education Professional Licensure in the following areas:
- Elementary
- Middle School Humanities
- Middle School Math/Science
- Secondary Biology
- Secondary Chemistry
- Secondary English
- Secondary Latin
- Secondary Math
- Secondary Physics
- Secondary Political Science/Political Philosophy
- Secondary Spanish
III. If you already possess an Initial License and a Master’s, you may do the following:
Post-Master’s Certificate for General Education Professional Licensure:
An 18-credit post-Master’s certificate program with three components:
- Core graduate-level courses concerning pedagogy related to your chosen level and field
- Graduate-level concentration courses related to the discipline for which licensure is being sought
- Capstone Sequence: courses and a capstone project related to your field of study and teaching
- UMass Boston has Massachusetts DOE approval for Professional Licensure in the areas listed in the previous section
IV. If you have a Bachelor’s degree and wish to complete a Master's for professional advancement in the field of education, but do not want Massachusetts licensure in teaching, you may do the following:
Master’s in Education without licensure
A 33-credit Master's program which includes the following:
- EDCG 642- Organization of School Curriculum
- One course in Critical and Creative Thinking
- One course in Dispute Resolution
- One course focused on urban education (e.g., EDCG 606 or EDCG 672)
- Seven additional courses, focused on a specific area of interest
- A final written comprehensive examination.
