Leadership in Urban Schools Doctoral Program
The Leadership in Urban Schools (LIUS) Doctoral Program develops leadership and research skills for teachers, administrators, and others committed to transforming urban schools. Public education in urban K-12 settings is at a crossroads. Educators daily encounter both an exciting new diversity and new complexity of contexts, including politics, system reform, high-stakes testing, shrinking resources, and an increasingly multicultural/multilingual student population.
Creating success in urban schools, including drawing faculties, students, and communities into the broader mission of revitalizing urban education, requires innovative leadership skills unique to urban institutions. Central to the effectiveness of these new leadership techniques are abilities such as working in teams, identifying and prioritizing problems, developing solutions for multi-faceted environments, balancing stability and change, and understanding and using appropriate theoretical frameworks and research methodologies. Coursework and research in the LIUS program focus on schools as organizations rooted in political, historical, economic, and cultural contexts.
Coming primarily from public and private K-12 schools and related agencies in Massachusetts, LIUS students are teachers, administrators, counselors, and educational specialists from school systems including Boston, Quincy, Milton, Brockton, Cambridge, Somerville, Framingham, Worcester, Fall River, Lawrence, Lynn, and others. The program is distinguished by eight defining characteristics:
Its emphasis is specifically urban.
It is interdisciplinary, using a variety of perspectives to approach urban education.
It is based on a cohort model.
It links research and leadership issues to the needs and experiences of practitioners.
It encourages participation by women and people of color who are or plan to become educational leaders.
It advocates an explicit anti-racist stance toward leadership and schooling.
It promotes new models of shared decision making in schooling.
It promotes models of broadly based and flexible administrative roles.
