How to Apply
Leadership in Urban Schools Doctoral Program
Go to http://www.umb.edu/admissions/graduate/ for the general statement of admission requirements for all graduate programs, as well as the general application for graduate admission. Contact the program office (617.287.7601 or leadership.education@umb.edu) for program-specific application materials, which are described below. The application deadline is March 15.
The Leadership in Urban Schools (LIUS) Doctoral Program seeks applicants who already hold a master’s degree or equivalent, and who can demonstrate:
- accomplishment in the field of K-12 education, particularly through school reform initiatives
- sustained interest in the culture, structure, and operation of urban schools and in new approaches to administration, policy development, and in issues of learning and teaching
- the potential for academic success and for completing the program without delay
- a desire to provide leadership for change in urban education
Applicants are invited to demonstrate these qualifications through submission of an admissions portfolio consisting of:
- an essay of approximately 1500 words describing the applicant’s aspirations and goals as a leader in urban schools and the ways in which these goals have been shaped by the applicant’s experience as a learner, educator, and/or participant in the effort to improve educational opportunities in the urban K-12 context
- a resume or curriculum vitae
- three letters of recommendation
- official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work
- test scores from the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (optional).
The admissions committee will interview all finalists before making its recommendations for acceptance to the program.
