Michael Contompasis

Michael Contompasis recently retired from the Boston Public Schools after 42 years of service and is currently the Director of Intergovernmental Relations for the City of Boston, where he is responsible for coordinating the City’s relations with federal, state, city and other local agencies. 

Mr. Contompasis was Superintendent of Schools for the Boston Public Schools from May 2006 to September 2007, after serving as Chief Operations Officer from 1998 to 2006, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school system.   Prior to his central office experience, Mr. Contompasis was Head Master at the Boston Latin School for twenty-two years.  He also served as an Assistant Head Master, a citywide Cluster Leader, and as a Biology teacher in the Boston Public Schools.

Mr. Contompasis received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences, a Master’s Degree in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, a Master’s Degree in Administration from Boston State College, and an A.B. in Biology from Boston University.

Mr. Contompasis has also received numerous awards during his educational career, including the Champion of Justice Award from the Discovering Justice Court Education Project in 2007, a Distinguished Service Award from the Council of Great City Schools in 2006, the Friend of Education Award from the Harvard Club of Boston in 2006, and the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 1997.  He has also been very active in local, regional and national educational leadership associations, including the Headmasters Association in Princeton, New Jersey, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, and the Massachusetts Pre-Engineering Program for Minority Students.

Mr. Contompasis’ academic focus is on educational leadership, organizational analysis, school reform, and collective bargaining and labor relations.
