Math Skills
The Math segment of the Directions for Student Potential Program is designed to address the following skills and concerns for students preparing to take university level mathematics:
-Basic math skills at the Pre-algebra and Elementary Algebra level
-Problem solving processes at Pre-algebra and Algebra level
-Math anxiety for students with limited math skills
-Mathematical reasoning in preparation for course requirements at UMass
Boston
Math course work will entail problem solving, regular quizzes and assessment tests at the beginning and end of the course. Students will work with the book Basic Mathematics: You Can Count on Yourself , a custom text for the University of Massachusetts Boston by Linda Falstein.
All students are required to take a math placement test prior to enrolling in the DSP program. Those who qualify for college level mathematics may place OUT of the math portion of the course. Students who are attending DSP are REQUIRED to take math if they do not score high enough on this test to place out of math. Students who are required to take intensive English language courses may not take math during the DSP program.
