Judith Kurland brings a wealth of public-sector policy development and experience to her position as Director of the Center for Community Democracy and Democratic Literacy.  Ms. Kurland had a distinguished career in public service, recently serving as chief of staff to Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Clinton administration. Ms. Kurland is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College with an AB in political science.

Kurland has taught and lectured at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard School of Public Health, Simmons College and the Medical Schools of Boston and Tufts Universities, has lectured widely, and published in peer-reviewed journals. Kurland has served as Commissioner of the Department of Health and Hospitals for the City of Boston, Senior Consultant to DCA Boston, Vice President for Strategic Planning and Corporate Affairs at New England Medical Center, Director of Federal-State Relations, Chief of Staff for the Office of the Massachusetts Lt. Governor; Chief of Staff for Congressman Michael J. Harrington, and Legislative Director to then Majority Whip Thomas P. O'Neill, Jr. Judith has served in senior leadership roles and on the board of directors in many community organizations including Health Leads, South Africa Partners, Massachusetts Public Health Association, National Center for Healthy Housing, and the Massachusetts Status on the Commission of Women, among others.
