Office of Programs for International Students and Visiting Scholars
The Office of Programs for International Students and Visiting Scholars produces programming initiatives that foster the collaboration of both international and domestic UMass Boston students and scholars through educational excursions, events, and workshops throughout the academic year. These programs provide the opportunity for the cultural adjustment of international students and scholars while promoting meaningful engagement on the UMass Boston campus and within the local community.

UMass Boston international students, IVSA scholars, and study abroad/exchange students participate in the Ethnic Enclaves of Boston Walking Tour guided by UMass Boston anthropology alumni
Newly admitted international students and scholars are encouraged to plan early for their success at UMass Boston by familiarizing themselves with events and offered programs. Before even arriving in the United States, international students can have a head start to their experience abroad by enrolling in the International Student Peer Mentoring Program. Read what three of the newest international peer mentors have to say about the program:
Youngjoon Shim, Undergraduate in Business Management. Home country: Republic of Korea
“Through being a peer mentor, not only can I help international students to adjust to life at UMass Boston, but I am expecting to learn a lot of things from the new international students themselves. It’s always exciting to meet new friends and learn about different cultures. This program will be beneficial for both mentees and mentors.”
Sandra Caballero. Undergraduate in International Management. Home country: Paraguay
“I decided to become a peer mentor because I thought it would be a great opportunity to give back to the UMass Boston community and to share with others the challenges that I overcame and my experiences as an international student. In the upcoming year, I look forward to meeting other international students and to share and learn from our different cultures. I am also looking forward to providing guidance, support, advice, and helpful information that international students can use to succeed in their studies and make their time at UMass Boston a memorable one. “
Charles Ogegere. MBA candidate. Home country: Nigeria
“As an international student, I once faced many challenges during my adjustment to life in the United States…. Now, as a peer mentor, I am looking forward to working with incoming students to help them to get acquainted with university resources, encourage strong study habits and involvement in university activities and student clubs.”
