The Anthropology Department

Anthropology is the systematic study of the nature of human beings -- as animals, as social beings, and as creators and users of symbols. This department's curriculum offers introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in the four fields of anthropology:

  • sociocultural anthropology
  • linguistic anthropology
  • biological anthropology
  • archaeology

Through these courses, majors and non-majors alike may investigate the origins and evolution of the human species and the wide range of human adaptive techniques (patterns of culture) exhibited by peoples in all regions of the globe, from the dawn of the Paleolithic to the present.
