Policies and Other Information about Anthropology

In addition to the information below, students, prospects and others may want to consult the Anthropology Department Web site .

Honors

Departmental honors involve an intensive two-semester program of individual research conducted under the direction of a member of the department and leading to the presentation of an honors paper. Requirements for honors candidacy include: senior standing; at least four upper-level courses in anthropology; a 3.5 GPA in the major, a 3.0 overall GPA; and the sponsorship of an honors advisor from among the department faculty. Qualifying students enroll in Anth 490 and Anth 491 during their senior year. Honors research is evaluated by a committee of three faculty members, including the honors advisor. For further details, consult the department's guide for majors.

Transfer Credit Policy

At least five of the eight upper-level courses required for the anthropology major must be taken at UMass Boston, but additional anthropology courses may be transferred for general University credit toward the BA degree. Students must petition the departmental curriculum committee to transfer courses for credit toward the major. One upper-level course may, with departmental approval, be applied toward requirements for the minor.

Meeting General Education Requirements

For students who matriculated with fewer than 30 credits in Fall, 2000 or Spring 2001, and for all students matriculating in Fall 2001 and thereafter (i.e. all students under Curriculum "B"), courses with a "G" prefix meet the Critical Analysis requirement. G100-level courses are designated "First Year Seminars"; G200-level courses are "Intermediate Seminars."

If students who matriculated prior to Fall, 2000 with fewer than 30 credits (those under Curriculum "A"), have not yet completed their 2-course Core requirement, they must do so by completing one course at the G200 level (Intermediate Seminar).

Graduate Courses in Anthropology

Undergraduates may take graduate courses for which they have completed the prerequisites by permission of instructor only. For any further information concerning the graduate program please call or write the Graduate Program Director for Historical Archaeology.
