The Certificate in Communication Studies

Students in the Communication Program complete a sequence of eight courses (24 credits): two foundation courses and six electives distributed over three areas of communication study. Because of the wide range of choices, each student interested in the program is expected to meet with the program director to develop his or her specific course sequence.

  1. Foundation Courses. All students are required to take the following:
  2. Elective Courses. Students select six courses distributed through the program's three areas. Students have two options for distributing these courses.
    • Option 1: Two courses in each area
    • Option 2: Three courses in one area (chosen from at least two groups), two in another area, and one in the third area.

No more than three of the six elective courses can be offered by the student's major department. The list of courses below represents current College of Arts and Sciences offerings considered appropriate for the program. Students should consult course descriptions for information on prerequisites. Since courses are introduced and modified each semester, the list below also changes frequently. The most current list is available from the program director.

Courses offered on an occasional basis do not appear in this listing but might be appropriate for the Communication Studies Program. For example, special topic courses in English (e.g., literary journalism) may be suitable in Area 1. Students should check with the program director at the beginning of each registration period for information about these courses.
