Requirements The Major

I. Core Courses (30 credits)
Sociol 101 (Introduction to Sociology)
CrmJus L262 (Sociol L262) (Criminology)
CrmJus L321 (Sociol L321) (Racial and Ethnic Relations)
CrmJus L351 (Sociol L351) (Methods of Sociological Research)
CrmJus L363 (Sociol L363) (Corrections)
CrmJus L368 (Sociol L368) (Alcoholism: Etiology and Epidemiology)
CrmJus L465 (Sociol L465) (The Police in Society)
CrmJus L467 (Sociol L467) (Sociology of Law)

II. Area Courses (12 credits)
Four courses chosen from offerings in five areas; at least two courses must be in one area.
Areas include:
A. Substance Abuse and Crime,
B. Community and Social Problems,
C. Mental Health Law and Crime,
D. Youth and Crime,
E. Law and Public Policy

A listing of courses in each area is available in the Criminal Justice Office.

III. CrmJus L461, (Internship in Law and Criminal Justice) (6 credits)
Criminal justice majors may count a maximum of five courses taken outside CAS toward the completion of major requirements. One CAS course may be taken on a pass-fail basis.

The Joint Major in Criminal Justice and Sociology

Students may complete a joint major in criminal justice and sociology by taking eight sociology courses in addition to the criminal justice major requirements. Two courses -- Sociol 101 and Sociol L351--may be double counted toward both majors. The other eight sociology courses must include Sociol 341 (Elements of Sociological Theory) and at least one other course at or above the 300 level.

The Double Major

Students can also elect a double major in criminal justice and another field. Regardless of major, not more than two courses can be double counted.
