If you are a Student in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences
Students in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences are required to pass the Writing Proficiency Evaluation.
Students are required to take NU 212 (Intermediate Seminar) before they have 60 credits and before the attempt the WPE.
The Writing Proficiency Requirement of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences can be met in the either of the following ways:
1. Successful completion of the Writing Proficiency timed-essay examination.
2. Successful completion of the Writing Portfolio essay option.
- Pre-licensure or generic nursing students must successfully complete the Writing Proficiency Evaluation prior to completing 75 credits and prior to taking NURSNG 310. If it is not completed you will not be allowed to register for NURSNG 310.
- RN nursing students and RN to MS students must complete the WPR prior to completing 75 credits and taking NURSNG 445 (or, if in the online program, NURSNG 461). If it is not completed you will not be allowed to register for NURSNG 445.
- EHS students must do so before enrolling in their first internship (EHS 490). If it is not completed you will not be allowed to register for EHS 490.
If you do not complete the WPE on time, then you will be unable to make normal progress toward your degree.
It is strongly suggested that students who need to retake the Writing Proficiency Exam take NU 250 Communication in the Health Professions. Or, if you are in the online program you can enroll in the online section of CRW 283, Proficiency in Analytical Writing, which will provide all three papers so that you can submit a WPE portfolio. These elective courses offer instruction and practice that will help you to pass the Writing Proficiency Evaluation and will help you to develop the critical readingand analytical writingskills needed to pass the WPE.
