What Happens if I am Required to Retake the WPE?
If your exam is given the evaluation of a "retake," the graders will fill out a report explaining areas that need improvement, and you will go over the reports with a counselor in the Writing Proficiency Office (WPO). The conference will give you an opportunity to discuss your essay, the faculty reports, and your options. In order to appeal your result, you must have a conference to discuss your essay or portfolio.
If you are required to retake the WPE and you have over 75 credits you must sign a Learning Contract with a counselor in the WPO or you will have a hold placed on your university account.
A typical leaning contract includes a limit the number of credits and courses that you may take (12 credits); and; it requires that you take CRW 282 or CRW 283-- reading and writing courses that are specifically geared to help you with the WPE. CRW 282 and 283 are "by permission only." Students who are over 75 credits and want to prepare to submit a portfolio should take CRW 283 to write three papers that all can be used in your portfolio.
Additionally, we have graduate student tutors in the WPO who can work with you on your portfolio, and we offer workshops that focus on the reading sets.
Students in CNHS who need to retake the Writing Proficiency Exam are strongly advised to take NU 250 Communication in the Health Professions. Or, if you are in the online program you can enroll in the online section of Proficiency in Analytical Writing (CRW 283), which will provide all three papers for a WPE portfolio. These elective courses will help you to develop critical and analytical skills through reading and writing assignments. In addition, the courses offer instruction and practice in critical reading and writing that will help you to pass the Writing Proficiency Evaluation.
