May I Apply for a WPE waiver?

WPR logoStudents who already hold a B.A. or B.S. degree may apply for a waiver, but that waiver is not automatic or guaranteed.

If you are in CLA or CSM you need to download a Waiver Request Form or get a hard copy from the WPO . You must submit the Waiver Request Form to the Writing Proficiency Office along with: 1) a copy of your UMB transcript; 2) an official transcript from the university that awarded your degree; 3) three writing samples (original graded papers-at least one that is five pages or longer, none shorter than three full pages). If you do not have substantial writing samples, which meet the criteria of the WPE, you may not apply for a waiver of the WPE.

If you are in CNHS and hold a baccalaureate degree you may waive the WPE by following steps one and two (above). Students who hold a previous degree from a non-English speaking University must also follow step 3 (above).

NOTE: Although one aspect of the Intermediate Seminar is that it helps you to prepare for the WPE, you may not apply for a waiver of the Intermediate Seminar simply because you have completed the WPE.
