What Happens if I do not complete the WPE on Time?
Not completing the WPR on time has different consequences depending upon the rules of the college that you are enrolled in.
Learning Contracts: If you're a student in CLA or CSM with between 75 and 100 credits
All students must take the WPE after sixty credits or at the end of the semester that they take an Intermediate Seminar (any G200 course) . However, if you do not successfully complete the WPE by the end of the semester in which you earn 75 credits, or if you have transferred with 75 or more credits, by the end of their first semester at the university, then you are required to sign a learning contract. The contract establishes a precise plan for the following semester to facilitate your success with the WPE. You will be allowed two learning contracts, up to 100 credits.
The first learning contract will limit you to 12 credits during the following semester; three of your credits will be a required a writingcourse: either CRW 282 or CRW 283. At the end of the first semester of a learning contract, students who have not been successful with the WPE will be offered a second learning contract of twelve credits; again, the contract will include a required writing course. Students who do not attempt the WPE at the end of this semester will be subject to suspension.
A student who does not complete the WPR after two learning contracts may not register for any course other than a writing course: CWR 282 or 283.
Matriculated students who have completed 75 or more credits but have not satisfied the Writing Proficiency Requirement will not be allowed to transfer in additional credits until they have passed the WPE.
Any student who has not signed a learning contract with a counselor in the WPO will have a hold placed on their university accounts and they will not be able to register for classes.
If you are in CNHS: Generic nursing students will not be allowed to register for NURSNG 310, RN nursing students will not be allowed to register for NURSNG 445, and EHS students will not be allowed to register for ESPE 490, unless they have successfully completed the WPR. Students in CNHS who do not pass the WPE will be unable to make normal progress toward their degrees.
It is strongly suggested that Nursing students who need to retake the Writing Proficiency Exam take NU 250, Communication in the Health Professions. Or, if you are in the online program you can enroll in the online section of CRW 283, Proficiency in Analytical Writing, which will provide all three papers so that you can submit a WPE portfolio. These elective courses offer instruction and practice that will help you to pass the Writing Proficiency Evaluation and will help you to develop the critical readingand analytical writingskills needed to pass the WPE.
Students with over 100 credits:
If you have over 100 credits and have not completed the WPR, you will be limited to writing classes until you have passed the WPE.
